After initial schooling at Vidhyodaya & Church Park in Madras, he was exposed to hostel life at Stanes School in Coimbatore. During World War II, he briefly studied at The Boys School in Sivakasi, which prepared him for his eventual entry into the prestigious Doon School in Dehradun.
At Doon School, he received a holistic education that fostered academic excellence, sportsmanship, and extracurricular activities, equipping him for the challenges of the outside world. Graduating with senior Cambridge honours in 1952, Rajan then pursued a B.A (Hons) in Economics at Delhi College, Delhi University, following in his father’s footsteps. He attended seminars at the Delhi School of Economics during his college years as well.
In 1956, a pivotal moment arose when he had to choose between a promising career with Imperial Tobacco of India Ltd. (ITC Ltd.) in Calcutta and tentative admission to the University of Cambridge in the UK. Rajan commenced his professional journey on August 1, 1956, and remained with ITC Ltd. until his retirement in April 1992, at the age of 56.
Rajan further enriched his experience by joining the Indian Leaf Tobacco Development Company Ltd., where he played a pivotal role in the merger of the company with ITC Ltd. He expertly managed Central Excise Matters amounting to a significant Rs. 800 crores, which was a notable achievement at the time.
In the final phase of his career with ITC, Rajan held a significant position as Member Finance, heading the Finance Department of the main Tobacco business.
